SUMMARY:Catching Students Before They Fall: A Weekly MTSS Early Warning System That Moved Freshman On-Track from 61% to 87% and Ranked #1 in Truancy Reduction
DESCRIPTION:Schools often identify struggling students only after they are already failing\, disengaged\, or chronically absent. This session will highlight how Proviso Township High School District 209 redesigned its MTSS Early Warning System to shift from reactive interventions to weekly\, preventative support for every student.\n\n\nParticipants will learn how the district implemented weekly BAG Reports (Behavior\, Attendance\, and Grades) that are shared with families and reviewed by school teams to monitor the progress of every student. Through consistent weekly data reviews\, staff identify early warning signs\, assign timely interventions\, and track impact before students fall off track academically or disengage from school.\nAs a result of this system-wide approach\, the district increased freshman on-track rates from 61% to 87% in one year\, ranked #1 in Illinois for reduction in chronic truancy\, and #5 statewide for reductions in chronic absenteeism. This session will walk participants through the structures\, routines\, and leadership decisions that made these gains possible—without adding unsustainable workload to staff.\n\n\nAttendees will leave with a replicable framework for implementing weekly early warning systems\, sample protocols for data review meetings\, strategies for engaging families through transparent communication\, and guidance on aligning MTSS practices with student wellness and prevention goals.

SUMMARY:Holding Space Without Carrying the Weight\, Supporting Students While Maintaining Emotional Boundaries.
DESCRIPTION:Teachers and school social workers are expected to provide emotional support to students while navigating complex demands and limited time. Over time\, this emotional labor can lead to fatigue\, blurred boundaries\, and emotional overload. This session explores how school-based professionals can hold space for students with empathy and professionalism—without absorbing emotional weight that impacts their well-being or effectiveness. Participants will gain practical strategies to recognize emotional overload\, maintain healthy boundaries\, and release emotional residue throughout the school day.

SUMMARY:Breaking the Silos between our Public Health and School Systems: How to Build a Single\, Cohesive Continuum of Support with the Interconnected Systems Framework (ISF)
DESCRIPTION:The current landscape of youth mental health in Illinois has reached a critical inflection point. With nearly half of Illinois youth reporting worsening mental health symptoms such as anxiety\, depression\, and loneliness\, rising hospital visits for mental health needs\, and suicide remaining a leading cause of death among youth\, the urgency for change is undeniable.\n\nThe "business as usual" approach characterized by well-intentioned but siloed agencies\, fragmented community partnerships\, and reactive school-based interventions is failing to keep pace with the increasing needs of our youth. This challenge is further compounded by the persistent and widespread shortage of mental health professionals and resources in both public agencies and school settings.\n\nThis session serves as a critical call to action\, urging a shift beyond merely co-locating community mental health services in schools. Instead\, we advocate for a true public health model that integrates the departments of education and public health. We will introduce the Interconnected Systems Framework (ISF)—a research-validated logic model and process designed to integrate systems into a single\, cohesive continuum of support between schools and their communities. Participants will be introduced to and walk away with multiple resources to support your agency in installation of an ISF. This session will also share the design logic of the new ISF-SHINE (School Health and Interventions for Nurturing Excellence) research grant\, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Education Innovation and Research (EIR) office and is implemented through the Lake County #34 Regional Office of Education (IL) in partnership with WestEd and the University of Illinois–Chicago.\n\n

SUMMARY:Leading Through the Social Media & Youth Mental Health Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Across the country\, educators are grappling with the growing impact of social media on student mental health\, behavior\, and learning. What once began as simple online interactions now shapes attention\, relationships\, and trust both inside and outside the classroom. From group chats to viral challenges\, digital culture has redefined school climate—often faster than policies or adults can respond.\n\n\nThis session helps school and district leaders understand and lead through the youth mental health crisis fueled by engagement technology. Grounded in current research and real-world implementation\, participants will explore how social media and device use affect attention\, emotional regulation\, and belonging before students even enter the building. The discussion highlights why current responses such as like phone bans\, monitoring software\, or compliance-based mandates\, often fail to address root causes or foster long-term change.

SUMMARY:Tethered and Whole: Avoiding Educator Burnout
DESCRIPTION:By May\, even the most dedicated educators can feel the strain—patience is thinner\, energy is lower\, and the finish line seems both close and impossibly far away. Tethered and Whole: Avoiding Educator Burnout is an in-person workshop designed to meet educators exactly where they are in this moment: tired\, stretched\, and still deeply committed to their students. Grounded in the core ideas from Matt's new book\,&nbsp\;Tethered and Whole\, this session invites participants to explore what it means to stay connected to purpose (tethered) while also maintaining a sense of personal well-being (whole). Rather than offering one more thing to do\, this workshop provides practical\, immediately usable strategies to reduce overwhelm\, regulate stress\, and navigate the emotional demands of the end of the school year. Through a mix of reflection\, discussion\, and interactive activities\, educators will examine the hidden patterns that contribute to burnout—such as overcommitment\, blurred boundaries\, and decision fatigue—and learn how to interrupt them with small\, sustainable shifts. Participants will leave with tools to create space between stimulus and response\, set clearer boundaries\, and restore a sense of agency in their daily work.\n\n

SUMMARY:Supporting Sustainable Behavior Practices: An Introduction to the BAT Project
DESCRIPTION:The Behavior Assessment Training (BAT) Project is a newly awarded statewide initiative\, funded by the Illinois State Board of Education and housed at Illinois State University\, designed to strengthen how schools and districts approach Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). Moving beyond compliance-driven practices\, BAT emphasizes function-based\, instructionally meaningful behavior planning that supports both student outcomes and adult capacity.\nThe BAT Project provides tiered professional learning\, coaching\, and implementation guidance focused on building sustainable district and school team capacity for effective behavior assessment and intervention. A central goal of this session is to introduce the BAT Project while beginning to build it in partnership with the field. This conference provides an ideal opportunity to listen and learn from educators\, administrators\, and support staff who are navigating behavior support challenges in real time.\nDuring the session\, participants will be invited to share their perspectives\, needs\, and priorities through intentional interactions designed to inform the professional learning content\, resources\, and targeted supports the BAT Project will develop as it launches. Input gathered will help shape how BAT focuses its training and technical assistance to best meet district and school needs across Illinois\, ensuring supports are practical\, relevant\, and responsive to the realities of school-based practice.

SUMMARY:The Breakfast Club’s Guide to Connection: Strengthen Conversation & Connection In Schools
DESCRIPTION:Hot take: educators don’t need one more thing. They need one simple thing they’ll actually use.\n\n\nTeachers\, administrators\, counselors\, and support staff are constantly being asked to do more... more SEL initiatives\, more mental health support\, more interventions\, more documentation\, more everything. And while the intention is good\, the reality is that overload doesn’t build connection. It builds burnout. The real need isn’t another program\, it’s a universal tool that fits into the hallway\, the classroom\, the office\, the meeting\, and the moment a student (or colleague) is clearly not okay.\n\n\nIn this interactive session\, Brittany Richmond shares that tool: three words that can change a conversation\, a relationship\, and sometimes the entire direction of a life—“Tell me more.” Brittany introduces her signature\, evidence-based\nTell Me More Method™&nbsp\;— a practical framework rooted in the power of curious questions. Rather than trying to fix\, lecture\, or force teens to open up\, the Tell Me More Method™ teaches educators how to create psychological safety\, reduce shame\, and invite honest dialogue that builds trust and belonging.\n\n\nGrounded in real school-based experience and storytelling\, Brittany uses the relatable lens of The Breakfast Club&nbsp\;not just as a movie reference\, but as a mirror of her own lived experience navigating anxiety and isolation as a student. Along with other personal stories\, they highlight a powerful truth: students don’t need perfect adults—they need present adults who know how to respond with empathy and confidence.\n\n\nThis session is designed to support students and the adults who serve them. Participants will learn how the Tell Me More Method™ can be used with students\, families\, and coworkers\, because school staff needs tools that strengthen connection not only with teens\, but also within their own teams. Educators will practice real-life language\, experience the method in action\, and leave with a simple strategy they can use immediately to build connection\, reduce isolation\, and create a culture of support.\nBecause when educators feel supported\, students feel supported&nbsp\;and sometimes the most powerful intervention is just three words: Tell me more.

SUMMARY:"I Need Help!": Building Support and Solutions for School Social Workers
DESCRIPTION:\nSchool Social Workers are essential mental health personnel who have been shown to positively impact students and schools. The need to respond to challenges facing schools and students can reduce the amount of prevention work that SSWs are able to complete. Additionally\, the job responsibilities of school social workers are continuously expanding. This qualitative study gathered data utilizing the Illinois School Social Worker Association listserv. This study consisted of 56 participants who all self-identified as school social workers in Illinois. Two open ended questions were asked of school social workers. The first was\, “If you believe that additional supports are needed\, what supports could they provide?” The second open-ended question was\, “As a school social worker what supports do you need to function more effectively?” These questions enabled us to understand perspectives of challenges and solutions that school social workers across the state have in regard to social work services and supports. Challenges and solutions were discussed by participants and provide guidance to school districts and school administrators about the services that school social workers can provide as well as the support they need to continue doing their jobs effectively. The two most prevalent challenges included the need for support through MTSS\, and the lack of tier 1 SEL programs in schools. Solutions focused practice implications are explored in the perspective of the school social worker.

SUMMARY:Catch the P.A.S.S.! How Peer Athlete Student Scholars (P.A.S.S.) Can Support Illinois Students
DESCRIPTION:Join student athletes\, Ary & Milan Bansal\, as they share their perspectives as high school students juggling sports\, academics\, clubs\, and school work. Through their grassroots efforts\, these students have identified ways to strengthen the school-to-home connection\, fostering a community of teachers\, social workers\, students\, athletes\, and community partners focused on supporting and promoting messages of &nbsp\;positive mental and physical health\, along with balanced academics and extra curricular activities. P.A.S.S. (Peer Athlete Student Scholars) program -a grassroots initiative started in 2023- seeks to grow its impact\, spreading the powerful message of peer-to-peer support and teamwork\, encouraging overall excellence and balanced well being and positivity for students. Key questions answered:&nbsp\;What do students need today to feel successful? How can they best be supported? How do you encourage students to take advantage of existing student wellness resources in school? How do we leverage community partners to meet kids where they are at and provide much needed support\, encouragement\, and positivity to school activities and academics? How do we mobilize parents and engage our audience better? Attendees receive a tool kit to implement the P.A.S.S. program in their schools.&nbsp\;\n\n\nSince its inception in Dec 2023\, P.A.S.S. has supported over 500 hours of free study groups and tutoring hours\, mentored hundreds of students\, recruited local community partners\, participated in local charity events\, and supported measurable outcomes for students that include academic growth\, positive role modeling\, and stronger school engagement at Hinsdale Central. These outcomes include improved grade performance in core content subjects\, study skills clinics and final exam prep sessions offered twice a year\, recruitment of over 50 volunteer tutors\, and countless parent and student reviews on how peer-to-peer support can be a powerful way to engage students. The P.A.S.S. program is simple: by harnessing the power of peer-to-peer relationships\, P.A.S.S. Volunteers are able to serve as role models\, friends\, study buddies\, and mentors for other students in the community and build and strengthen relationships between teachers\, social workers\, students\, coaches\, school leadership\, PTO\, and classes. Who better to support students stressed and overwhelmed in school\, feeling lonely\, then other students? “When we work together\, we excel together” is our motto. The program brings support models to the frontlines-when students need it most: after school\, evenings and weekends\, before school\, and even during the school day and ensures stronger lines of communication between staff\, teachers\, coaches\, and parents and students. &nbsp\;This program can easily be replicated in any school throughout Illinois. P.A.S.S. showcases how school staff and administrators\, social workers\, clubs\, students\, and local libraries and community centers can come together to foster change\, empower students\, and &nbsp\;encourage positive role models and support for student health\, well being\, and academics. Catch the P.A.S.S. today!&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
