Urban Initiatives (UI) has partnered with Network 11 in Chicago Public Schools to host an eight-session PD series designed explicitly for PE teachers to support social emotional learning in their classes. PE represents a unique opportunity to integrate SEL into lessons, and this PD series based on a research validated coaching methodology supports PE teachers to do exactly that. Participants will learn about the methodology, hear best practices on partnerships between nonprofits and school districts, investigate program impact, and get a blueprint for creating a similar program for their district.

This session invites educators to deepen their understanding of student behavior and the factors that shape it, including developmental stages, stress, and trauma. Participants will explore how play can be used as a powerful tool to navigate challenging behaviors while fostering emotional regulation and resilience. Through interactive strategies and practical examples, attendees will leave equipped to create supportive learning environments where every student can grow and thrive.

Dating Matters is a prevention model developed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stop teen dating violence before it starts. It includes prevention strategies for individuals, peers, and schools. Dating Matters focuses on teaching 11–14 year-olds healthy relationship skills early and reducing risky behaviors, like substance use and sexual risk-taking. 

If you teach health, physical education, recreation or dance, then this session is for you! The Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (IAHPERD) is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) educational organization, which through the action of its members, continuously strives to fulfill the following mission: to provide professional support and guidance to educators throughout the state as they develop and conduct educational programs. This session will go through the ins and outs of the association including membership, programs, awards, grants, social media, and advocacy. 

This session will reviews Illinois requirements and guidance related to physical education, fitness testing, and recess.  Topics include instructional time, student exemptions, FitnessGram expectations, and recess considerations, including alternatives to withholding recess.  Time will be included for questions and discussion around common school scenarios.
