Lieutenant Keith Cox has been a member of the Illinois State Police (ISP) since 2001. He is currently assigned to the Division of Criminal Investigation, Threat Mitigation Unit, as the Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management Team (BTAM) Bureau Chief. He previously served in the Office of the Director, Office of Firearms Safety as the Assistant Bureau Chief overseeing the day-to-day functions of sworn and non-sworn personnel, ensuring legal and effective enforcement of Illinois “Red Flag Laws”. Before that, Lieutenant Cox served the ISP Academy as the Section Supervisor in the Physical Skills Section, ensuring the safe and efficient training of sworn officers and trainees in Firearms, Emergency Vehicle Operations, and K-9 Operations. He also served the ISP in the Office of Labor Relations, the Equal Employment Opportunity Office, the Special Operations Command as a Tactical Operator with Special Weapons and Tactics Teams, and as a patrol officer. In 2024, Lieutenant Cox developed the ISP Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management Team for the ISP Threat Mitigation Unit. The team is comprised of over 30 certified investigators who have successfully assessed individuals making concerning communications to Illinois public officials, State employees, and State facilities.
